EC wants rural and city internet equality

March 19, 2009 · Filed Under blog

The European union through the European Commission say that just over 30% of the population of the EU’s rural areas are not connected with any kind of high-speed Internet and have to suffer dial up or no connection at all. They want member countries as well as large telecom providers to bring together rural and urban broadband provision in a more equally shared arena, and what’s more they want these changes implemented by 2010.

While it is true and highly significant that just over 90% of the citizens of Europe already make use of some kind of high-speed connection either land line or mobile broadband many potential customers in less well populated areas still flounder with basic dialogue or no Internet connection at all.

Amongst the latest internet broadband news is a new and possibly life changing directive from the European Commission (EC) for all nations within the EU to bring together townies and village folk and close the divide between rural and urban areas with regard to broadband speeds and availability.

They make a point of the fact that there are huge potential benefits for all concerned with new technology such as Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line not only for regular people in rural areas but also for all kinds of new business opportunities that are not in the main towns and city’s. They also feel that the implementation of faster broadband connections to more consumers will be very helpful in stimulating the economies of member states.

The want to see a more equal broadband comparison between city and small village They feel that when they compare in rural and urban situations there is a very unsatisfactory divide, presumably because it is not very viable financially to supply services such as bonded ADSL2+ in less densely populated areas.
